Can anyone advise where we can purchase good quality paint for interior/exterior woodwork. Back home here in the UK, we like the quality and chalky colours of Farrow and Ball paint - and looking for something similar to paint some of our interior and exterioor doors in our Trullo when we are out next in April. Dont want to go too far afield from where we are (Locorotondo). Anyone got any recommendations? Thanks again.

Hello Jon & Laura.

You are close to Vilplastik, quite a large paint supplier (colorifici here) with a decent reputation. You will find them in Contrada Trito - telephone: 0804431281. Have a look at either the map on Paginegialle or Google to find them.

Good luck with it and be careful not to paint over any existing lime wash with anything other than lime wash as it will cause many problems. They wil help you with some sensible advice at Vilplastik, I'm sure.

Hi L & J

A good suggestion from Peter. We used their water based paints and they are OK, although we do not yet know how well they will stand up over time. You can also have the paint mixed to whatever colour you want but beware the colours on their swatch cards are only an indication as we found the paint dried darker.

Hi Peter. Thank you so much. We will look them up when we are out next. This sort of help really saves us some of our valuable "working holiday" time when we visit our Puglia home on each occasion. Also thanks for the "heads up" on the lime wash issue.

Peter - we have replied to your help and advice as above.
R - just to check - why did you go for waterbased paint as opposed to oil based? Was this for outdoor woodwork also? We need to paint over some doors/window frames that have been previously painted (horrible colour), so will need to do the usual wood prep stuff then probably use an undercoat first.

Waterbased is easier to use, environmentally nicer and some are now suitable for use outside. Also the colour option we Liz wanted was not avilable. Waterbased paints have come a long way in the last two years and worth looking at, although can be dearer and as not as resiliant as oil based but secondo me look nicer ( the chalky look you mentioned). Having said that, with the extremes of temperature/weather I expect to repaint the doors every couple of years anyway. Of course that is a pain in the **** but the alternative of modern doors was unacceptable to us when restoring a trullo
